Research and Media Requests :: Older Dads - TV Documentary

Hi Homedad Forum users,

My name is Matthew and I work for a TV production company in London called Twofour Broadcast (www.twofourbroadcast.co.uk). I am currently developing an idea which has had some interest from a large terrestrial channel and wondered if you might be able to help.

The working title of the documentary would be “OAP Dad’s” and it aims to look at men who are about to become fathers (either again or for the first time) in their 60’s. In the last couple of years there has been a lot of press on this subject and we are looking for possible male contributors to follow. Ideally their partners would be going through a pregnancy at the moment but we’re also interested in speaking to any older gents with young children. Obviously there is a good chance these gents will be "stay at home" Dads.

I understand this situation only accounts for a very small amount of births in the UK/US each year but as such this makes it a fascinating subject. Much has been made of the social, medical, and psychological implications of men in their 60’s fathering children and we’d love the opportunity to make a balanced documentary on the subject.

So, if you know of anyone who is going through this unique type of pregnancy or have any information or contacts which might prove useful I’d appreciate it if you let me know. Even if its just an article you’ve read please let me know as even the smallest thing may help me track down the perfect contributor.

I’m available to talk about any aspect of my project either on the phone or via email (details of which I’ll add below). Initially, I’d just be looking to speak to people over the phone so there is no pressure on any prospective contributors.

I look forward to hearing from you - Happy New Year to all,

Best Wishes,

Matt

Would it benefit you?

I think the main question is: What is the primary objective to the building of such a site? If the aim is to make money, then what exactly is your income stream? Advertising, presumably, but that requires a significant amount of traffic which will only come if people know where you are. How will that happen?

If the purpose of the building it is just for fun, then go ahead. Don't worry about our opinions... if it's good then people will use it... if it's not then, well... they won't... but that won't matter because you primary objective (building it for fun) has already been reached.

There are about fifty pet projects I'd love to have a go at... generally with the vague idea that one day they'd make some money and justify themselves, but the reality is that to even devote one week (say 40 hours) to them is 40 hours not spent on less pie-in-the-sky activities... I guess that is what retirement is for!

I certainly don't want to piss on your fireworks... but the other problem that you'll face is how do you stop troublemakers plastering your site with links to their own project? If anyone can add a "park" what is to stop the pizza-shop owner (or worse!) adding their own entries?

We'd still like to see the first draft though, I think!

Sounds interesting. I wouldn't use it except if I was on holiday because I know where the playgrounds are. perhaps a Google Earth overlay is the way to go?

I think there are about 400 local council in the UK. You could email them and ask them for a list of playgrounds? make it a web site with adverts on and you could make a modest amount of money. For instance (and just for the record, so you guys know, Homedad has made me $8.03 since August, so perhaps not a fortune, but you never know.

Sorry Phil. I'm inclined to think that there are other ways to find out this sort of information, like walking around and having a look. If you want to read and rate local amenities there are sites such as Qype where you can already do this.

What you're likely to get are a load of people moaning their arses off about how crap their local park is instead of doing something about it ... everybody else will be out in the park enjoying themselves!

Did I mention "bah humbug"?

Sorry (again), isn't the subject maybe a bit narrow for an entire site ... why not broaden things out a bit. Consider other amenities that might be of interest to parents and children ... if you do that there may be good scope for an advertising/promotional element.

Gentlemen,

A couple of weeks ago someone mentioned to me at a party that we needed a site with all the playgrounds in our area on. So, i did what a man is supposed to do when he has had one too many: i started hacking something together.

The idea is pretty simple: click on a marker and you get info on a playground. Click anywhere else on the map and you can add a marker.

Now, the site is pretty rough, for example: when you add a marker, the view returns to the view of Birmingham from the start.

I have dozens of ideas to improve the site and the functionality but before i do some more work on it i want to know from you: Would you use a site like this? Would it benefit you? Is this information already out there? Your views and opinions are most welcome.

Hi all,

I'm Chris Good, a freelance journalist.  I'm doing a piece  for FQ magazine that explores the ethics and responsibilities related to teaching our children how to fight -with martial arts or boxing.  The idea is for the piece to be unbiased, but have within it all sides of the argument;

Do you think it's fine? Or more than that,
Do you think it's right?
Do you think it's wrong?

Please consider some of the following;

Shouldn't we teach our children to defend themselves? There are bullies out there?

Are we equipping our children to be bullies?

If a child knows how to block a punch and break an arm (which is the first thing I learned at Jiu Jitsu at the age of 15, is he controlled enough (given a young person's susceptibility to peer pressure and actions of social redemption) to be responsible with the power and strength he has? Will he ONLY use reasonable force, and therefore be innocent in the eyes of the law?

Or, is it great for building confidence and character?

Does the fact that it's an appealing and attractive form of exercise outweigh the responsibilities of having such power and strength?

If you would like to take part, please email me, with some of your thoughts and a contact number.

Many thanks,

Chris

Hi Gary, that pretty much goes without saying. The Head Teacher though deserves a good metaphorical kicking, since the first time I met her she's been disclosing information to parents that she really shouldn't be, whether it's her dissatisfaction with a particular member of staffs decision to take flexible working or a the fact that a particular child has 'problems' at home.
